Workshopweek in Paramaribo

Anton de Kom Universiteit van Suriname & workshop week

In 2020, in collaboration with Sun Kishoen Misier (Head of the Infrastructure Engineering department) of the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, Lennert Bonnier and Pascale Willems continued to shape a design studio with students on sustainable mobility in the city. Due to Covid, it took a long time before a work week could be held in Suriname. However, Paramaribo, as one of the four cities, could be included in the November 2021 Design Studio. Finally, in the summer of 2022, Iganga was able to co-organize a workshop in Suriname. The physical week with students, teachers University and also employees of the city of Paramaribo was successful. In three groups the participants formulated the goals for Paramaribo, sketched a network for sustainable mobility for Paramaribo and worked out a street design that contributes to the goals for the city. The three groups presented their plans at Firm Engineering. The reactions, results and evaluation showed that the study week in Paramaribo was highly appreciated. This is also a great example for other cities and universities that we may visit in 2023 and beyond, at the request of local partners. The set-up and the material produced are very useful for this.
